🏗️ Limassol Chamber warns traffic crisis threatens city’s economic growth and business confidence
The Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry has raised serious concerns about the city’s worsening traffic congestion, warning it poses a threat to economic growth, business confidence, and the retention of major companies. Chamber president Andreas Tsouloftas highlighted that ongoing delays in critical infrastructure projects, especially the long-awaited northern bypass, jeopardise the city’s position as the economic engine of Cyprus, contributing nearly 50% of the national GDP. Tsouloftas urged that the issue requires urgent multi-ministerial coordination to move projects from planning to execution.
At a recent meeting led by Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, officials acknowledged the problem’s severity and discussed prioritising both large scale and smaller-scale projects to alleviate traffic pressures. The northern bypass, costing up to €200 million, remains the centerpiece solution to divert traffic and reduce congestion, with potential construction starts expected in 2026. Meanwhile, local authorities emphasized complementary measures across the district, including improved road links and sustainable transport initiatives like bus lanes and cycling infrastructure, aimed at reducing reliance on private vehicles.
