Cyprus' police chief Themistos Arnaoutis has ordered a formal investigation following the escape of a 17-year-old detainee from the Omorfita police station. The teenager, who was held in connection with a theft case, escaped late Thursday but surrendered and was rearrested at a Nicosia police station the next day.

The police chief reviewed an incident report and appointed an investigating officer to examine possible disciplinary offenses related to a police officer involved in the case. Meanwhile, procedures have begun to suspend the officer pending the outcome of the inquiry. The incident has raised questions about security procedures at the police station.
