⚔️ Cyprus seeks permanent Greek air force and naval presence amid deepening defence cooperation

Cyprus is pursuing a permanent deployment of Greek air force fighter jets at Paphos airbase to enhance protection of its Flight Information Region following a recent drone attack on RAF Akrotiri. Currently, Greek F-16 fighters rotate through Cyprus, but Nicosia aims for a continuous presence to better counter asymmetric threats from the Middle East, with a possible future transition to F-4 Phantoms. This arrangement also facilitates operational familiarisation between Greek forces and the Cyprus National Guard.

In addition to the air force presence, a Greek Navy frigate is set to maintain a permanent presence in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone, contributing to maritime security and surveillance. The frigate Elli (F 450), equipped with advanced weapons and electronic countermeasures, is currently on patrol, with naval forces rotating periodically for crew rest.

Further strengthening defence ties, Cyprus and France have signed a new Status of Forces Agreement to formalise joint military operations, exercises, and mutual presence. Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas highlighted that this agreement builds upon a strategic partnership signed last December, covering naval, land, and air cooperation aimed at enhancing interoperability and rapid coordinated response.
