🌍 European diplomats express serious reservations over Cyprus joining Schengen zone amid Green Line challenges
Diplomats from six European Schengen member states have voiced significant doubts about Cyprus' readiness to join the border-free Schengen area as its 30th member. Concerns focus on Cyprus' handling of technical requirements and the unresolved issue of the Green Line, the island’s divided boundary. Diplomats warn Cyprus' approach may undermine the integrity of the Schengen entry/exit system.
Since European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen took office, the accession process has reportedly become more top-down, with strong pressure on member states to accept Cyprus. However, insiders say Cyprus prioritizes reassurances over tangible fixes, raising skepticism about its commitment. The planned omission of Schengen's digital entry/exit system at Green Line crossing points could allow irregular movement of third-country nationals, complicating border control for other Schengen states.
Some diplomats foresee growing frustration among member states, potentially resulting in stricter border controls that could harden the island’s division. While EU capitals may still push accession forward despite embassy opposition, suggestions for compromise solutions such as Frontex-managed border checks at ports have emerged to maintain ease of movement while addressing security concerns.
