🌍 UN envoy visit to Cyprus sparks little public interest amid 'Cyprob fatigue'

The recent visit of UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin to Cyprus has garnered only modest media attention, reflecting widespread public and political fatigue with the long-standing Cyprus problem. Unlike in the past, when such visits dominated headlines and sparked intense debate, today's coverage has been subdued, signaling diminished public enthusiasm for ongoing talks and initiatives.

Cyprus politicians, including the president, continue to promote the idea of an enlarged peace meeting under the UN with hopes of resuming negotiations. However, skepticism remains high due to Turkey's consistent refusal to engage constructively. Government negotiator Menelaos Menelaou emphasized the importance of active EU involvement, linking unresolved issues between Ankara and Brussels with efforts to advance the peace process, though details on how this would work remain unclear.

Meanwhile, other government officials have undertaken costly international trips, such as Deputy Minister Clea Hadjistefanou Papaellina's address at a UN conference in New York and the president's attendance at the blessing of the Sagrada Familia tower in Barcelona. These activities have drawn public criticism amid calls for more focused and effective political action on the Cyprus issue.
