🌍 President Christodoulides highlights convergences as key to new Cyprus talks progress

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized that the convergences achieved in the Cyprus talks are central to ongoing reconciliation efforts. Speaking to Kathimerini, he expressed cautious optimism about the current negotiations, describing them as a "very promising effort" while stressing no ambiguity will be tolerated especially regarding security and guarantees.

Christodoulides noted Turkey’s willingness to resolve the Cyprus issue hinges on its benefits, with the European Union being the primary incentive. He confirmed discussions with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen about a new envoy to facilitate progress, underscoring the importance of political will to reach a workable solution by year-end.

Additionally, the President addressed broader policy, stating that the Secretariat for European Affairs will continue post Cyprus’s EU presidency, and confirmed no final decision yet on his 2028 presidential candidacy. He highlighted Cyprus’s strengthened international standing and ongoing strategic energy and defense collaborations, including a recent SOFA agreement with France.
