👮 Customs seize large quantities of undeclared tobacco and cigarettes at Paphos airport and Ayios Dhometios crossing
Customs officers seized significant amounts of undeclared tobacco and cigarettes in two separate incidents on June 13 at Paphos airport and the Ayios Dhometios crossing point. At Paphos airport, two Spanish passengers were stopped before their flights to Manchester after suspicions arose. Officers discovered 469 and 491 packages of rolling tobacco in their luggage, respectively, all lacking mandatory health warnings and security features indicating they were duty unpaid. Both passengers were arrested; one was later released after an out-of-court settlement of €8,000, while the other faced further legal action.
In a separate case the same day, customs officials at the Ayios Dhometios crossing detained a Turkish Cypriot man attempting to cross into government-controlled areas with an infant. A search of his belongings revealed 200 packets of cigarettes without the required markings, indicating they were also unpaid. The man was arrested but subsequently released following an out-of-court settlement of €1,200. In both cases, the confiscated tobacco products were seized as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal trade.
