Cyprus Secures US Support for Energy Projects and Regional Cooperation

Energy Minister Michael Damianos confirmed that Cyprus has gained strong US backing for its energy initiatives, including hydrocarbon extraction and electricity interconnections. During a week of high-level meetings at the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum and Atlantic Council events, Damianos held talks with top US officials and regional energy ministers, reaffirming the US commitment to Cyprus' broader energy agenda within the 3+1 framework alongside Greece and Israel.

Discussions emphasized the importance of regional stability and energy security, with Washington supporting ongoing cooperation efforts in the Eastern Mediterranean. The minister highlighted that Cyprus will not invest financially in extraction projects but will receive its fair share of natural gas revenues, which it currently lacks. Damianos also addressed recent criticism, stressing that energy projects will proceed under conditions protecting Cyprus’ national interests.

Furthermore, Damianos introduced the Eastern Mediterranean Energy Centre, an initiative aimed at fostering collaboration in education, training, and technical expertise among participating countries, underscoring its significance in promoting regional energy development and cooperation.
