🌍 Xeros and Diarizos Valleys to Become Cyprus’ First UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

The Xeros and Diarizos river valleys in Cyprus are set to become the country’s first UNESCO biosphere reserve, marking a major step in promoting environmental protection, sustainable development, and cultural preservation. The proposed biosphere reserve covers a large area in the Paphos district and includes 32 communities, aiming for international recognition through a nomination dossier prepared for UNESCO.

Unlike traditional nature reserves, biosphere reserves integrate environmental conservation with economic activity, cultural heritage, and community development. The region was selected due to its ecological significance, biodiversity, and rich cultural landscape, which includes traditional villages and diverse habitats. Officials and local stakeholders hope this designation will enhance protection, support sustainable tourism, and foster scientific research.

Local communities, authorities, and organizations are actively involved in the nomination process to ensure their priorities are represented. The initiative aligns with Paphos’s long-term strategy for sustainable development, with expectations that UNESCO recognition will boost nature- and culture-focused tourism while strengthening environmental stewardship and economic resilience in the area.
