🏗️ First phase of Pedieos River restoration in Nicosia completed, enhancing green public spaces and cycling infrastructure

The first phase of the Pedieos River/Kanli Dere Restoration Project in Nicosia has been completed, marking a significant advancement towards a greener and more accessible urban environment. Funded by the EU and implemented by UNDP Cyprus, the project restores natural habitats and builds sustainable public spaces in the divided capital. Phase one includes a 1.2km stretch featuring a two-way cycle lane, pedestrian walkway, and a green belt connecting the Ledra Palace crossing with the river corridor.

The initiative aims to promote sustainable living by improving walking and cycling infrastructure, fostering environmental awareness, and strengthening community ties. Local residents, community groups, and officials celebrated the milestone with walking and cycling activities along the new route. The corridor is expected to attract 250,000 visitors annually by increasing green spaces and providing accessible recreational areas.

Phase two is scheduled to begin in September, with plans to expand the walking and cycling network further to support sustainable mobility, environmental protection, and social interaction in Nicosia.
