🔥 Cyprus fire service inspects buffer zone for fire hazards amid firefighter detention incident

The Cyprus fire service has launched a campaign to inspect the buffer zone to identify fire hazards and ensure necessary clean-up operations, including rubbish removal and vegetation clearance, to protect homes in government-controlled areas. Fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis emphasized the risk of fires spreading from the north to the south near the buffer zone.

The inspections follow an incident where a Greek Cypriot firefighter was detained by Turkish Cypriot police while accompanied by UN police during an assessment in the buffer zone of Pyla. The firefighter was taken to Pergamos without an official explanation. The area is under UN administration, where access is closely regulated.

Authorities are working to address fire risk vulnerabilities in this sensitive zone, amid concerns over cross-border fire threats. The fire service continues coordinating with relevant bodies to carry out clean-up operations to safeguard residents and properties in the vicinity.
