💊 Foot-and-mouth disease sampling continues in Pakhna area, vaccinations to resume next week

Sampling for foot-and-mouth disease in the 3 and 10 kilometer zones around Pakhna continues, with no positive cases found so far, according to representatives of the Epidemiological Team after a meeting with Veterinary Services. Vaccinations are set to resume next week and are expected to be completed by early to mid-August. Nationwide, 830 holdings have been investigated, except for Pakhna where delayed sampling is ongoing due to earlier movement restrictions.

Recent surveillance in Paphos showed all negative results, while sampling in Limassol will conclude soon. Animal culling has affected 3.5% of cattle, 9.5% of sheep and goats, and 7.7% of pigs. The National Guard and Police continue to play a vital role in enforcing biosecurity measures and disinfection efforts. Authorities emphasize the importance of strict compliance with biosecurity, vaccination, and movement restrictions to control the outbreak.

Plans for restocking affected farms depend on fully assessing the epidemiological situation, completing cullings and sanitation. Experts anticipate conditions for reactivating livestock holdings may be met by autumn, supported by summer heat reducing virus presence. Vaccinations next week will cover units previously unvaccinated, as part of ongoing efforts to contain and eventually rebuild Cyprus's livestock industry.
