🧒 Parents' Union Raises Concerns Over Possible Misuse of Exam Accommodations in Cyprus Pancyprian Exams
The high school parents' union in Cyprus has voiced concerns about the potential misuse of exam accommodations in the Pancyprian entrance examinations, alleging that some students may have used false medical certificates to secure extra time during written exams. The union's president, Loizos Konstantinou, highlighted reports involving two schools in Paphos where senior students reportedly obtained an additional half hour by presenting disputed documentation. This issue comes amid a noted rise of around 100 students requesting exam facilitation compared to five years ago.
In response, the education ministry stated it has not received any official complaints but confirmed that accommodations are granted through a specialised committee in line with legal regulations. These accommodations aim to ensure fairness for students with documented educational or health needs, based on assessments by district special education committees and relevant medical reviews. The ministry emphasised that the integrity of the Pancyprian examinations is paramount and any suspected fraudulent activities would be investigated by state authorities.
The Pancyprian entrance exams serve as Cyprus's national university admission test, designed to provide equal conditions for all candidates based on performance. The ministry reiterated that the examination process upholds merit and equal treatment, ensuring students with legitimate needs receive appropriate support.
