👮 Hourly Paid Government Employees to Hold 24-Hour Nationwide Strike and Protest in Nicosia
Hourly paid government employees in Cyprus are set to stage a 24-hour nationwide strike and protest march on Wednesday. The demonstration will begin at 10am outside the finance ministry in central Nicosia and proceed towards the presidential palace, with police warning of potential road disruptions, including Byron Avenue.
The strike follows a breakdown in negotiations over a renewed collective agreement, with unions accusing the finance ministry of delaying talks for over a year. Workers are demanding salary increases and improved employment conditions. Union representatives have stated that despite submitting proposals more than a year ago, efforts to reach an agreement have stalled, warning that further industrial action could follow if no resolution is found.
Authorities have advised the public to use alternative routes and adhere to police instructions during the protest to minimize traffic disruptions.
