🌊 Cyprus Hosts EU Conference Unveiling First Strategies for Islands and Coastal Communities
On June 26, Cyprus will host a High-Level Conference in Paphos focused on "Strengthening EU Islands and Coastal Communities." The event will feature the participation of Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela, with the central highlight being the unveiling of the European Commission’s inaugural comprehensive strategies targeting Europe's islands and coastal areas.
These new strategies address the needs of 17 million island residents and 95 million people living along EU coastlines, aiming to convert geographic and economic challenges into sustainable opportunities. The island strategy comprises four pillars: economic development, energy security, demographic support, and enhanced safety measures. For coastal communities, emphasis is placed on a diversified blue economy, including pescatourism and offshore renewable energy.
Presented by key EU officials, the conference will include discussions on maximizing island potential and reinforcing coastal resilience, concluding with recommendations ahead of the Irish EU Presidency. These initiatives seek to improve public services, reverse depopulation, and promote environmental sustainability to ensure vibrant, secure island and coastal regions across Europe.
