💰 Central Bank of Cyprus Considers Systemic Risk Buffer Amid Strong Bank Performance
The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) is evaluating the activation of a Systemic Risk Buffer to protect the banking sector against emerging risks, despite Cyprus banks currently showing the strongest fundamentals in their history. CBC Governor Christodoulos Patsalides emphasized improvements in capital adequacy, liquidity, profitability, and asset quality during the annual Association of Cyprus Banks meeting.
Patsalides warned that the banking sector’s high concentration and reliance on similar business models could amplify shocks, highlighting the need for macroprudential policies to continuously adapt. He also noted reputational risks due to public concerns over deposit rates and stressed the importance of strategic risk management by banks’ boards.
Additionally, the governor pointed to broader challenges including geopolitical tensions, climate change, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, all factors that could impact financial stability. Patsalides underscored the strategic importance of the digital euro for Europe’s financial autonomy and encouraged banks to focus on resilience and long-term sustainability over short-term profits.
