🌍 Cyprus House President Annita Demetriou stresses need for genuine cooperation on Cyprus problem

Cyprus House President Annita Demetriou stated on Tuesday that the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides are not currently aligned on the Cyprus problem, with Turkey being even further away from a solution. She emphasized that those genuinely interested in resolving the issue must find ways to contribute positively and highlighted the ongoing efforts to resume negotiations within the previously agreed framework.

Demetriou pointed to recent diplomatic moves, including contacts by UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin and discussions within Europe, aimed at achieving closer convergence between the parties. She acknowledged that the Cyprus problem is influenced by wider regional and international developments, and stressed the importance of appropriate diplomatic and political responses.

Speaking after her re-election as House president during a courtesy call on the Archbishop, Demetriou underlined the importance of respectful dialogue and expressed hope that the current momentum can be used to move closer to a solution. She also remarked on the necessity of serving institutions and roles responsibly in the ongoing political situation.
