🏗️ Cyprus Ministry of Interior Plans Affordable Housing Blocks in Refugee Settlements
The Cyprus Ministry of Interior is developing a new housing plan to build apartment buildings on vacant state land within refugee settlements, aiming to offer affordable rents to benefit the refugee community. This announcement was made by Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou during the first meeting of the new Parliamentary Committee on Refugees.
The Minister detailed past policies implemented over the last three and a half years and highlighted ongoing initiatives like the "ktizO" project, which includes the completion of two apartment buildings by July and four more in progress across Nicosia and Limassol. The plan is still in initial stages, focusing on identifying burden-free vacant lots for construction to support refugees.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the transparent management of Turkish Cypriot properties, issuance of property titles in refugee neighborhoods, and the legislative framework regarding refugee housing loans. Committee members expressed the urgency of accelerating housing projects due to ongoing shortages and proposed adjustments to income criteria and rental subsidies to better meet current living costs.
