🌊 Cyprus highlights strategic role of fisheries in EU food security and sustainability agenda

Cyprus Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou emphasized the importance of fisheries as a strategic pillar for the European Union’s food security and sustainability during the recent Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting in Luxembourg. She praised the Cypriot government's efforts in advancing fishing regulations and international ocean governance agreements during its presidency.

Discussions at the council focused on the future of the common fisheries policy (CFP), particularly in adapting to environmental changes and economic challenges. European Fisheries Commissioner Costas Kadis acknowledged progress in sustainable fishing levels since the last CFP reform but highlighted ongoing weaknesses that require attention.

The evaluation aims to ensure a sustainable and resilient fisheries sector for the long term, addressing pressures on marine ecosystems and combating illegal fishing, especially in the Mediterranean region. Kadis urged enhanced cooperation among countries to tackle these critical challenges facing the fisheries sector across the EU.
