📰 UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to resign with new leader by September
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday, setting a leadership transition to be completed by the time Parliament returns in September. This will mark Britain’s seventh leader in 10 years. The leadership contest will open nominations on July 9 and close by July 16 before Parliament breaks for recess.
Candidates must secure the support of at least 20% of Labour MPs, equating to 81 lawmakers, alongside backing from grassroots and affiliated Labour Party organizations. If multiple candidates qualify, the winner will be chosen by a ballot of all Labour members and affiliates. If only one candidate qualifies, they are elected unopposed.
Starmer’s timeline aims to have a new Labour leader and prime minister in place by September 1, when Parliament resumes. The party’s governing body will officially decide the details of the leadership contest schedule.
