Cyprus hosted the 148th meeting of the Europol Management Board at the Filoxenia conference centre, marking a significant moment as the country completes its 18-month term as deputy director of the board. Justice Minister Costas Fytiris emphasized that European cooperation in combating crime is not just political but delivers real results, particularly in addressing serious organised crime, terrorism, cyber-attacks, and protecting children online.
Fytiris highlighted the challenges posed by technological advancements and criminal networks, underscoring the need for vigilance, coordination, and investment in law enforcement capabilities. He pointed to Europol’s role in supporting EU member states with advanced tools like artificial intelligence and data analysis to enhance their effectiveness while respecting EU principles.
Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis noted the increasing complexity and speed of security threats that cross national borders, stressing the importance of Europol as a crucial partner in information sharing and technical support. Europol Management Board Chairman Ireneusz Sienko praised Cyprus for hosting the meeting and reaffirmed the vital role of cooperation in tackling threats across Europe and beyond.
