👮 Domestic and gender-based violence cases rise in 2025 with increased severity, Spavo reports
The Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family (Spavo) reported an increase in domestic and gender-based violence cases in 2025, with incidents becoming more complex and severe. Psychological abuse was present in all cases, while 63% involved physical violence, and other forms such as economic, spiritual, stalking, sexual, and online abuse were also documented. Spavo handled 81 new cases last year, predominantly involving women aged 35 to 45.
The organisation stressed the urgency of timely intervention and effective victim support, as violence intensified in about half of the cases. Spavo operates 17 services and received 5,728 calls through the national helpline. State funding of €2 million supported its initiatives in 2025, underlining government confidence in its critical work to protect victims and raise social awareness.
Officials highlighted that domestic violence remains a major social issue with profound societal impacts. Experts emphasized that multi-agency cooperation is vital for effective prevention and victim assistance, stressing that failures in collaboration ultimately harm those affected by violence.
