💊 Key meetings this week to discuss easing foot-and-mouth disease restrictions in Cyprus
Crucial committee meetings related to the management of the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Cyprus are expected to take place this week. Authorities and veterinary bodies will focus on livestock farmers' requests for easing measures, following a recent trend of stabilization in the situation. Discussions will cover grazing, animal transportation, and the movement of products and feed.
The General Director of the Ministry of Agriculture, Andreas Grigoriou, stated that the advisory committee on the disease is scheduled to convene by the end of the week to assess the possibility of implementing some relaxations. At the same time, a new epidemiological monitoring cycle will begin to evaluate antibody levels from vaccinations, with results expected by autumn to support gradual lifting of restrictions.
Additionally, the Ministry is working on allocating an extra 15% compensation fund to livestock owners affected by the disease. Coordination continues with Greek authorities through a joint working group to exchange information and align vaccination and control measures, with plans for further meetings scheduled in July.
