👮 Hundreds protest in Nicosia demanding resignation of attorney-general and deputy over corruption report
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the legal service’s office in Nicosia on Monday evening calling for the resignation of attorney-general George Savvides and his deputy Savvas Angelides. The protest followed the publication of the anti-corruption authority’s findings related to allegations in Makarios Drousiotis’ book Mafia State. Both officials have recused themselves from the investigation, transferring responsibility to the prosecutor’s office.
Organised by Akel and Volt, protesters carried banners condemning corruption and cover-ups. Akel secretary general Stefanos Stefanou described the findings as evidence of a systemic problem linked to the administration of former president Nicos Anastasiades. Stefanou emphasized that the attorney-general’s office must be free of conflicts of interest, citing the officials’ prior roles under Anastasiades as grounds for their resignation.
Former Akel MP Christos Christofias and Volt member Alexandra Attalides also called for the legal officers’ resignations. Meanwhile, the report recommends further investigation into Anastasiades and former officials, with tax audits ordered for several individuals. Anastasiades is expected to publicly respond to the report in a press conference on Tuesday.
