🌊 Cyprus Fisheries Department Assures Silver-Cheeked Toadfish Poses No Threat to Swimmers

The Cyprus fisheries department has confirmed that the invasive silver-cheeked toadfish, known locally as lagokefalos, does not pose any danger to bathers or swimmers. Officials emphasized there have been no recorded unprovoked attacks on humans and that the fish is only toxic if consumed. This statement follows public concern and social media reports suggesting the species could be harmful to people in the water.

Environmental organisation iSea and experts, including biologist Evagoras Isaias, also dismissed fears of attacks, noting the fish only defends itself if disturbed by human interaction. The silver-cheeked toadfish, which entered the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal around 20 years ago, is highly adaptable and considered a major problem for the fishing industry due to damage caused by its strong teeth.

Containing a potent neurotoxin dangerous when ingested, consumption of the fish is banned throughout the EU. The government has removed over 103 tonnes through an eradication program involving local fishermen, although officials acknowledge the species cannot be completely eliminated. Authorities urge the public to focus on the environmental impact rather than safety fears for swimmers.
