👮 Indian workers allege human trafficking and wage exploitation in Cyprus food delivery sector

A group of 25 Indian nationals has accused Cypriot authorities of ignoring their plight as victims of human trafficking and contract substitution within the island's food delivery industry. The workers claim they were recruited in India under false promises of earning €1,200 monthly, but upon arrival, their pay was drastically reduced to €300–€500, with some not being paid at all. They further allege they paid high recruitment fees of up to €13,000 via family loans, leading to debt bondage.

Following a complaint, Cyprus Police's Anti-Trafficking Unit opened an investigation and provided temporary aid to the workers. However, only 10 out of 50 involved were officially recognized as trafficking victims, leaving many without official protection despite similar circumstances. The workers have submitted a petition demanding full victim recognition, compensation, continued welfare support, and assistance in securing residence, work permits, and rightful employment.

Authorities stated the investigation is ongoing and follows established victim identification protocols. The case has drawn criticism for inconsistent responses to the workers' claims. The High Commission of India and human rights group KISA are involved in addressing the issue.
