👮 Cyprus Sees 9.8% Increase in Road Fatalities in 2025 Despite Long-Term Decline
Cyprus recorded a 9.8% rise in road fatalities in 2025, although it achieved the 12th largest reduction in road deaths across the EU27 since 2019, according to the European Transport Safety Council’s 20th annual Road Safety PIN Report. The island nation ranked 16th in the EU for road deaths per capita in 2025, down from 14th in 2024, with a per-capita road death index slightly above the EU average.
Over the longer term, Cyprus reduced road fatalities by 13.5% between 2019 and 2025 and achieved a 21.1% reduction over the past decade. The country also made notable progress in reducing serious injuries, with a 29.2% decrease from 2015 to 2025, ranking seventh among EU member states reporting data.
The EU overall saw a small 2.3% decrease in road deaths in 2025 compared to 2024, with a total of around 19,500 fatalities. However, the 14.6% reduction since 2019 falls far short of the 31% target needed to halve fatalities by 2030. The report highlights that progress varies widely across member states and urges governments to adopt a Safe System approach and increase investment in road safety measures.
