⚔️ Cyprus Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas Defends Military Partnerships and Expansion Plans
Cyprus Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas has strongly defended the republic’s expanding military partnerships, emphasizing that Cyprus will not seek approval for its defence agreements. He highlighted the recently signed Status of Forces Agreements (SOFAs), including the one with France, stating that the security of Cypriot citizens is non-negotiable. Palmas also called on Turkey to focus on the ongoing occupation of Cypriot territory rather than criticizing Cyprus’ alliances.
Palmas outlined the country’s strategic use of the EU’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) mechanism, which allows Cyprus to access up to €1.18 billion in long-term loans to strengthen defence capabilities. He confirmed plans to modernize key military bases with support from the US and France and indicated a focus on acquiring advanced drone and counter-drone systems. Despite challenges, he reiterated Cyprus’ aspiration to join NATO when political conditions allow.
In addition to security concerns, Palmas stressed the goal of building a domestic defence industry to boost economic growth and autonomy. Reforms in military personnel policies, including efforts to improve conditions for contract soldiers and address gender equality in the armed forces, are also underway. The minister acknowledged challenges but maintained that Cyprus aims to become a stronger strategic player in the region.
