👮 Justice Minister announces master plan for new prisons by September amid ongoing improvements in current facilities
Justice Minister Kostas Phytiris stated that a master plan for new prison facilities will be ready by September or early October to be presented to local communities. The new correctional structure will be built in the Mathiatis area, with financial discussions underway with the Development Bank of the Council of Europe.
Phytiris acknowledged that current prison conditions are not ideal but stressed ongoing efforts since January to improve them. These include hiring a prison director, recruiting 90 new guards, and upgrading technology to detect contraband, like the recent interception of a drone carrying drugs. The Minister emphasized that while the present facilities cannot become fully modern, the goal is to enhance conditions for both staff and inmates until the new institutions are operational.
The Justice Ministry is closely collaborating with the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT), whose recommendations serve as a roadmap for reform. Phytiris also praised the police force for their high standards during a recent awards ceremony, highlighting the dedication and professionalism of the new generation of officers.
