🧒 Cyprus Education Ministry to Submit New Teacher Appointment Bill as POED Suspends Dialogue
The Cyprus Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth plans to soon present a new bill to Parliament regarding the teacher appointment system, Education Minister Athina Michaeilidou announced on Friday. The Ministry is working on legal amendments to address issues in examinations and the criteria for entering the education sector. The goal is to improve the quality of education and implement reforms without setbacks.
Meanwhile, the Cyprus Educational Workers Organisation (POED) has decided to suspend its participation in discussions after the end of June until the Ministry submits a written comprehensive proposal. POED reaffirmed its stance for maintaining appointment and tenure processes through the current appointment lists even beyond 2027 and stressed it will take all necessary measures to protect teachers’ rights if proposed changes diverge from its principles.
Minister Michaeilidou highlighted the complexity of the issue due to social and legal dimensions and emphasized ongoing consultations with educational organizations. She confirmed the Ministry is open to dialogue and committed to preparing solutions that respect the experience of current educators while addressing systemic distortions.
