🏗️ Safety hazard on Argyroupoleos Avenue in Strovolos due to lack of protective barrier above residential backyards
A safety hazard has been identified on the newly opened Argyroupoleos Avenue in Strovolos, where the road is elevated up to 2.5 metres above the backyards of at least ten neighbouring homes with no protective barrier along its length. Residents expressed concern that vehicles losing control could fall into their backyards, making them afraid to use their outdoor spaces.
The Department of Public Works is aware of the issue and has confirmed that a solution is underway. Executing engineer Giorgos Xipsitis stated the problem was recognized during construction and that a metal protective barrier will be installed at a relatively low cost compared to the total project budget.
Argyroupoleos Avenue, which opened on June 4, is part of a larger road improvement scheme linking several major roads in Strovolos. Authorities, including Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, are monitoring the situation. An acoustic study on noise pollution is also being recommended, though no noise barriers were initially planned as the road is not classified as a motorway.
