🏠 Over 1,000 Dangerous Buildings Mapped in Larnaca with 300 Apartments at Collapse Risk
A recent mapping exercise by the Larnaca District Local Government Organisation has identified 1,050 dangerous buildings across the district, nearly twice the number previously recorded. Among these, 31 buildings classified as high risk of collapse (Category C) are occupied, housing around 300 families primarily in Larnaca city centre, including apartment blocks in Sotiros and Chrysopolitissa.
The DLGO has prioritized immediate action on the occupied Category C buildings, aiming to address all within 15 days, while sealing unoccupied structures. Notably, the Filanda apartment block near the port, with 79 apartments and 10 shops, is among the most dangerous. Property owners have been urged to maintain their buildings or face administrative fines.
Challenges persist as current legislation requires court approval for fines and evacuations, delaying interventions. The DLGO has initiated evacuations and closures since late May but warns that further displacements could worsen social issues amid high rents and housing shortages. The Interior Ministry plans to allocate €2 million to assist, though resources remain insufficient for the scale of the problem.
