💊 Foot and Mouth Disease Situation Stable in Cyprus with Ongoing Vaccinations and No New Cases
The foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in Cyprus remains stable, with no new cases detected and vaccinations continuing across the island, veterinary association chairman Demetris Epaminondas confirmed on Saturday. Tests from Limassol and recent samples from Nicosia have all returned negative, indicating control over the spread.
An island-wide surveillance campaign will soon begin to assess antibody levels from the vaccines and check for any hidden presence of the virus. Vaccinations are progressing well and are expected to be completed by late August or early to mid-September. Contrary to concerns, Epaminondas assured that vaccine supplies are sufficient to complete all planned immunizations, including those for pigs.
Culling operations are mostly complete, except for certain sheep and cattle, and the warmer summer weather is expected to reduce the virus’s survival rate, further limiting transmission risks. Combined with strict biosafety measures, these factors are helping to stabilize the situation in preparation for the fall season.
