Cyprus has restarted the long-delayed Akamas development project with a significantly revised plan aimed at reducing environmental impact. Key changes include narrower road widths, fewer visitor hubs, and the introduction of a protected natural reserve covering 741.13 hectares, which bans human activities such as hunting for the first time.

The revamped project divides road improvements into three phases spanning approximately 51km, with initial construction on Phase A planned to commence in late 2026 and complete by the end of 2027. Phases B and C focus on safe forest access and fire protection while preserving the area's natural character, with works targeted for completion by 2028. The number of visitor hubs has been reduced from 14 to eight, and infrastructural footprints have been substantially minimized.

Additional measures include training 16 park rangers since May 2026, updated operating rules for Akamas National Forest Park, and plans for a visitor transport service to reduce traffic during peak seasons. Hydraulic and retaining wall studies are also underway, demonstrating a comprehensive approach aimed at balancing development with conservation in the Akamas peninsula.
