🏠 Nicosia Metropolitan Municipality Cuts Deficit by 80% and Completes Over 77% of Citizen Requests in Two Years
The newly established metropolitan municipality of Nicosia has significantly improved its financial and operational performance since the local government reform two years ago. Mayor Charalambos Prountzos announced an 80% reduction in the municipality's deficit and reported that over 77% of the 22,594 citizen requests submitted have been completed, marking a successful transition after merging several municipal authorities.
The municipality introduced consolidated public services including five service centers, a unified call center, and expanded digital platforms, enhancing efficiency and transparency. Environmental initiatives include planting over 22,000 trees, maintaining more than 1,000 green spaces, improving waste collection by 50%, and launching Cyprus' first citizens' energy community named "Lefkothea" to support sustainability.
Other achievements include advances in sanitation, public health, and digitalization efforts such as automated irrigation and smart applications. The municipality's cultural sector remains active with over 150 events annually and notable international awards. Social services have expanded alongside a historic center revitalization and the upcoming arrival of two universities in Faneromeni, reinforcing Nicosia’s role as a dynamic capital city.
