🌍 EU set to announce new envoy for Cyprus peace talks soon

The European Commission will soon name a new EU envoy for the Cyprus problem, President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed upon arriving at the EU summit in Brussels. The position has been vacant since March 2026 following the resignation of former commissioner Johannes Hahn.

Christodoulides revealed that candidate names were discussed at the summit and that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will make an official announcement after completing internal deliberations. The envoy will play a crucial role in coordinating with the United Nations to revive stalled negotiations aimed at reunifying the divided island.

The Cyprus peace talks have been at a standstill since 2017, making the EU’s involvement critical in efforts to resume dialogue and achieve a lasting settlement. Christodoulides emphasized the EU’s decisive role in advancing the peace process during the ongoing two-day European Council meeting.
