👮 Cyprus Faces Seasonal Surge in Cockroach Infestations Amid Summer Heat
As summer temperatures rise across Cyprus, households are experiencing a notable increase in cockroach activity, with peak infestations typically occurring in early June. The island is home to three main species: the American cockroach, the German cockroach, and the Oriental cockroach, with the American cockroach accounting for 60% to 70% of summer pest control callouts. These pests thrive in Cyprus’s mild Mediterranean climate and extensive underground root networks of olive and citrus trees.
Urban areas like Limassol face higher cockroach prevalence due to aging sewer systems and reduced natural predators, while rural areas such as Latchi benefit from intact ecosystems that help control populations. Experts advise that conventional cleaning and extermination may be insufficient; homeowners are encouraged to seal drains, repair gaps around doors and pipes, and replace cardboard storage with plastic bins, as cardboard attracts cockroaches.
The general fear of cockroaches, medically known as katsaridaphobia, stems from their unpredictable behavior and association with unsanitary conditions. By focusing on physical deterrents and maintaining proofed entry points, residents can effectively minimize infestations and protect their homes from these resilient summer pests.
