🌴 Cyprus municipalities raise sunbed and umbrella fees on organised beaches to support facility upgrades

Municipalities across Cyprus have increased charges for sunbeds and umbrellas on organised beaches this summer, with the maximum fee for a beach set rising from €7.50 to €10. The central beach committee approved the new limits, allowing local authorities to set lower prices if they choose. The move aims to support upgraded beach facilities and services, marking the first substantial price adjustment in about two decades, according to Ayia Napa mayor Christos Zannettou.

The increase has sparked criticism from consumer groups concerned about added financial pressures on households and complaints about alleged overcharging and difficulty renting individual items. Zannettou maintained that Cyprus remains competitively priced compared to other destinations and reassured the public that designated free beach areas remain accessible for those bringing their own equipment. He emphasized that visitors are not obliged to rent full sets and should be able to rent single sunbeds or umbrellas separately.

Local authorities continue investing significantly in beach infrastructure, with Ayia Napa alone spending over €2 million on upgrades in recent years. Beachgoers experiencing issues are advised to first raise concerns with beach managers and then the relevant municipality, with unresolved complaints referred to the central beach committee for further review.
