🧒 Cyprus Shipping Chamber celebrates 20 years of 'Adopt a Ship' maritime education programme
The Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) commemorated the 20th anniversary of its 'Adopt a Ship' programme, one of the island's longest-running maritime education initiatives. The closing ceremony for the 2025–2026 cycle was hosted by Columbia Shipmanagement, bringing together teachers, industry representatives, and organisers to recognise their contributions.
The programme, established in 2006 in cooperation with the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association (CYMEPA), connects elementary schools with seafarers on ships operated by CSC member companies. Through direct communication with ship crews, pupils gain practical insights into maritime life, cargo transport, trading routes, and geography.
Attendees included Despina Pirikki representing Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis, whose support was acknowledged. Certificates were awarded to participating teachers as a gesture of appreciation. The initiative, approved by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, aims to inspire young people to consider careers in shipping both at sea and onshore. Applications for the next school year open in September and close in December.
