The Paphos district court has imposed fines totaling €55,000 on three companies following a fatal workplace accident at a construction site. The court ruled that K Aristodemou (Sideras) Ltd was fined €22,000 for failing to ensure proper safety harnesses and adequate insurance coverage, leading to an employee’s fatal fall from about eight metres. S Georgiou Construction Ltd, the main contractor, received a €20,000 fine for violating health and safety regulations, while Celicandia Ltd, the project owner, was fined €6,500 for failing to submit proper documentation and update the health and safety plan in due time.
In addition to company fines, three individuals were convicted for breaches of construction site safety regulations. They were collectively fined €6,500 and received suspended prison sentences ranging from nine to twelve months, suspended for three years. The prosecutions followed an investigation by the labour ministry's inspection department into violations that contributed to the worker’s death.
