⚔️ Spanish Artist Develops Device to Challenge Satellite Militarisation and Space Privatisation
A Spanish artist in residency at NeMe Arts Centre is creating a speculative device designed to sabotage satellites and clean up space debris, aiming to spark a conversation about the increasing privatisation and militarisation of space. The project, named Free Universal Cleaning Kit for Satellite Decolonisation (F.U.C.K-SD.), builds on his previous work that targeted underwater internet cables to highlight issues of surveillance and control.
The artist critiques platforms like SpaceX’s Starlink, which he sees as an example of techno-imperialism and monopoly in orbit, raising important questions about who controls the skies and with what consequences. He stresses that space, often portrayed as a neutral scientific domain, is increasingly becoming a contested territory shaped by powerful corporations and military interests.
Beyond technology, the artist explores geopolitical implications relevant to Cyprus, noting the island’s role as a surveillance and internet hub entangled in international spying networks. He believes art can uniquely provoke critical thinking and emotional engagement, highlighting the urgency of addressing control over information and territory in today’s complex digital and political landscape.
