📰 Afro-Cypriots: Uncovering the Hidden History of Cyprus’s African-Descended Community

Afro-Cypriots are a longstanding but largely overlooked community in Cyprus, with roots tracing back to the Ottoman period. Their presence spans both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, speaking both languages and practicing varied faiths. Historically, Afro-Cypriots worked in agriculture, fishing, mining, and port-related occupations, with established families in areas like Episkopi, Famagusta, and near Ercan airport.

Despite their centuries-old history, Afro-Cypriots remain mostly absent from school curricula and public narratives due to Cyprus’s focus on ethnic conflict. This has caused their heritage to stay hidden, leading to misconceptions that they are recent arrivals or solely descended from slavery. Moreover, Afro-Cypriots have faced subtle forms of racial discrimination, including colourism and the use of racialized language, which has affected social inclusion and identity.

In recent years, voices such as artist Serap Kanay have encouraged acknowledgement and celebration of Afro-Cypriot identity, emphasizing that their story contributes to a fuller understanding of Cyprus’s diverse history. Recognition of their experiences challenges narrow national narratives and fosters greater inclusivity on the island.
