👮 British couple fined €12,900 for smuggling 43,000 cigarettes at Paphos Airport
A British couple was caught smuggling 215 cartons of cigarettes, totaling 43,000 cigarettes, at Paphos Airport. Customs officials discovered that the cigarettes lacked the required health warnings in Greek and Turkish and were missing security features and traceability codes, indicating that they were smuggled. The couple, travelling with their four-year-old child to Bournemouth, United Kingdom, agreed to pay a €12,900 out-of-court fine and had their luggage confiscated before being released.
The cigarettes were considered duty-free but were illegal as no applicable taxes were paid. The total amount far exceeded the UK's personal allowance for travellers, making the shipment subject to significant excise duties.
In a separate incident, Cypriot customs confiscated illegal pesticides from a driver crossing from the north at Astromeritis-Zodias. The driver was found carrying containers of liquid and powdered pesticides, which will be destroyed following established protocols.
