🌴 Nicosia Tourism Doubles in Winter, Focuses on Authentic Experiences and New Attractions
Only six per cent of tourists visiting Cyprus choose Nicosia as their destination, but this figure more than doubles to around 15 per cent in the winter season, according to Sotiris Christoforou, an officer at the Nicosia tourism board (Etap). Visitors to the capital are typically young, under 40 years old, with a majority of 51 per cent being women seeking authentic experiences, gastronomy, and nightlife.
Recent investments in boutique hotels and large hotel complexes have significantly increased accommodation capacity in the city, with more developments underway. Nicosia is also expanding its tourism appeal through special interest sectors such as food and industrial tourism. Unique initiatives include exploring ice cream production tours at local factories and turning mines and quarries into tourist destinations.
In addition, efforts to enhance cultural heritage include cataloging historic street signs and revitalizing the British-era historic water tower at Solomos Square, which will become a visitor information center featuring digital tools like virtual reality headsets. These projects aim to enrich the visitor experience and highlight Nicosia's distinct tourism identity throughout the year.
