A nationwide awareness and education campaign on Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) has been officially launched in Cyprus, emphasizing the importance of prevention and early diagnosis. The campaign, organized by Alektor Pharmaceutical and AstraZeneca, is supported by the Cyprus Society of Nephrology, Internal Medicine, Diabetes, and Cardiology. It aims to shed light on CKD, a condition affecting over 80,000 people in Cyprus, many of whom remain undiagnosed.

Experts highlighted that CKD often progresses silently, with a significant number of patients unaware of impaired kidney function. They stressed the disease’s close links with diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular conditions, and underscored early detection’s role in slowing progression and improving quality of life. CKD is a growing challenge globally, with more than 93 million affected in Europe and a projected rise in mortality rates by 2050.

Despite the severity, the campaign offers optimism, noting advances in prevention and treatment. Officials urged individuals, especially those with diabetes or heart conditions, to engage with their doctors about kidney health. This collaborative initiative strives to increase public knowledge and encourage timely medical intervention to combat CKD effectively.
