🎉 Nicosia installs 56 new street signs highlighting city's history and personalities
Nicosia has installed 56 new street signs around its old town, showcasing the capital’s cultural, historical, and political figures. The initiative, led by the Nicosia tourism board (Etap), will expand to cover 150 streets, focusing on the area around the new municipal building. Each sign includes brief information about the street's name origin and a QR code linking to more details online.
The project began with Lellos Demetriades square, honoring the city’s longest-serving mayor. Etap officials conducted extensive research to uncover the history behind street names, many established in the 1970s and ’80s with unclear origins. Streets named after notable figures such as philosopher Diogenous and playwright Aeschylus are featured.
Future plans include incorporating the signs into a tour route and extending the initiative to other historic districts. Additionally, Etap is collaborating with the Cyens research centre to catalogue busts and statues within old Nicosia, providing historical context and explanatory texts, with completion expected by November.
