📰 Turkish Cypriot PM Unal Ustel Proposes Holding Local and Legislative Elections Together in December

Turkish Cypriot 'prime minister' Unal Ustel proposed holding both local and legislative elections simultaneously on December 6, challenging opposition parties to accept this plan. He cited legal requirements for local elections to be held in December and said changes to the electoral law were only those recommended by the supreme election council chairman.

The suggestion came amid debates over early legislative elections, which opposition parties like the CTP strongly favor following their recent electoral successes. Ustel, however, maintained that the next legislative elections would either occur in January or December alongside local elections, rejecting calls for earlier polls.

Opposition leader Sila Usar Incirli dismissed Ustel's six-month timeline as insufficiently bold and pushed for elections in August. Even within the ruling coalition, DP leader Fikri Ataoglu opposed holding the two elections together, emphasizing the need for all parties to agree on the date.
