🌍 EU opens formal negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova under Cyprus presidency
European Affairs Deputy Minister Marilena Raouna announced the formal opening of intergovernmental negotiations between the European Union and the countries of Ukraine and Moldova. This milestone marks the commencement of accession talks under the Cyprus presidency of the EU Council, highlighting a significant step in bringing these nations closer to EU membership. Cyprus has actively coordinated efforts since January to ensure the timely start of these negotiations, emphasizing the transition from political aspirations to concrete commitments.
Raouna stressed that EU enlargement is both a strategic investment and a geopolitical necessity, enhancing regional security and stability amid global challenges. In addition to the talks with Ukraine and Moldova, Cyprus is also advancing negotiations with Montenegro, described as the frontrunner in the enlargement process, having completed nearly half of the required negotiating chapters.
Since Croatia's EU accession in 2013, no new members have joined, and the UK’s departure has altered the bloc’s composition. Cyprus remains committed to maintaining a merit-based enlargement process to expand the European space of security, stability, and prosperity.
