🌍 House President Demetriou urges stronger EU role in Cyprus reunification talks
Cyprus House President Annita Demetriou has called for a more structured and robust European Union role in ongoing talks aimed at resolving the Cyprus problem. In a letter to Manfred Weber, leader of the European People’s Party (EPP), Demetriou emphasized that the recent diplomatic movements under UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin represent a cautious but meaningful step forward. However, she cautioned that the situation remains fragile, with significant political distance between the parties involved.
Demetriou highlighted Turkey's continued public advocacy for a two-state solution, despite its softened stance following the election of the Turkish Cypriot leader last year. She welcomed the appointment of Johannes Hahn as the EU envoy for the Cyprus issue but stressed that his upcoming resignation should not diminish European engagement. Instead, she called for sustained EU support and the appointment of a renewed dedicated EU representative to complement UN efforts.
The House President expressed gratitude for the EPP's longstanding support of a unified Cyprus in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and EU principles. She underscored that progress on Cyprus would enhance stability in the eastern Mediterranean and strengthen Europe's role as a champion of reconciliation, peace, and the rule of law.
