👮 Cypriot government reported to Council of Europe over alleged mistreatment of prison wardens by union Isotita
Trade union Isotita has formally reported the Cypriot government to the Council of Europe over alleged mistreatment of its prison warden members. The complaint, now registered with the European Committee of Social Rights, highlights adverse measures taken against the union’s deputy leader Giorgos Maltezos after he raised concerns about overcrowding, drug trafficking, and understaffing at Cyprus’ central prison. The union claims these actions are part of a broader effort to silence and weaken the union.
Isotita also alleges that its branch leader Constantinos Constantinou was assigned duties in confined spaces despite medical exemptions, and that the government has financially favored another trade union with over €8.4 million in sponsorships while providing nothing to Isotita. Justice Minister Costas Fitiris acknowledged the central prison’s overcrowding and mentioned government plans for a new facility near the village of Mathiatis, though local opposition and the expected extended timeline complicate this solution.
